Traidcraft Stall

Friday 24 October 2008 at 11:33 am Phil and Linda Logan are now running a Traidcraft stall at St Andrew's after the 9.30 service on Sundays. Please support people in some of the world's poorest countries by buying items from them.
Traidcraft fights poverty through trade, helping people in developing countries to transform their lives. It was established in 1979 as a Christian response to poverty. They are the UK's leading fair trade organisation, and run development programmes in some of the poorest countries in the world, campaigning in the UK and internationally to bring about trade justice.
Ask Phil and Linda about gifts and the Traidcraft catalogue or visit the Traidcraft online shop at http://www.traidcraftshop.co.uk.

Disability Project for Kenya

Wednesday 13 February 2008 at 6:13 pm WICKEN HOME GROUP is planning a trip in 2010 to a remote community in the heart of Kenya.  The purpose being to assess the needs of the disabled children and adults in a very poor community.  Going ahead of us, in a shared container, we shall send any equipment for the disabled that we are able to acquire, either as donations or purchased with money we raise.  We intend to be well-equipped when we visit the village of Mbaranga in the mountainess area of Mount Kenya. St Laurence's link with Rwanda

Monday 28 January 2008 at 2:57 pm

St Laurence's Church has a link with the Diocese of Cyangugu in Rwanda, Eastern Africa

map of Rwanda

The link was forged in 1999 when Peter Rash, Churchwarden, embarked on a trip to Rwanda to repair some vehicles for the church out there.  This led to lasting friendships with many of the people he met and, as a result, Patrice Kalisa (Patrick to us), the Bishop of Cyangugu's driver at the time, came to Wicken in the year 2000 to train as a vehicle mechanic.  He stayed with Peter and Julie Rash for three and a half months, taking part in village events, worshipping at St Laurence's Church, actively contributing to our church home group and generally enriching the lives of the people in Wicken and anywhere he went.

St Laurence's links with the Methodists

Wednesday 09 January 2008 at 1:32 pm St Laurence's has close ties with the Methodist Chapel in Wicken which is part of the Newmarket and Ely Circuit. This includes a joint service on the second Sunday of each month, held (roughly) alternately at St Laurence's and the Chapel in North Street. Please see the Wicken calendar to confirm the venue.

Links With Schools

Monday 03 December 2007 at 12:41 pm

St Andrew's C of E Primary School

We have strong links with St Andrew's School, a church school attended mainly by children from the southern part of Soham and from Wicken. The Vicar, Tim Alban Jones, is a foundation governor as are three members of the congregation including the chair of governors, Katie Driver. Several members of staff are also members of our congregation. The clergy take an assembly there once a week and twice a term all the pupils are taken to church for a special assembly. They also make educational visits to the church and we in turn hold some of our social events there. For more information about the school  see the St Andrew's School website.

The Weatheralls Primary School and Soham Village College

The clergy also make regular visits to Soham's other schools to lead assemblies and we welcome groups from both schools to the church for educational visits.

Churches Together in Soham

Sunday 11 November 2007 at 08:57 am

There are four other churches in Soham - Baptist, Methodist, Salvation Army and Community Church;

St Andrew's, the Methodists, Soham Community Church, the Salvation Army and Roman Catholics (who worship in Ely or Newmarket) try to work together so far as present circumstances allow. A group of Churches Together in Soham meets four times a year to plan joint services and other events such as Lent Lunches and the annual Christmas card delivery.

The Wider Church

Saturday 10 November 2007 at 12:05 pm

The benefice of Soham and Wicken is part of the Fordham and Quy Deanery within the Diocese of Ely. For information about the way the Church of England is governed see the How We Are Structured section of the Ely Diocesan website.

The Fordham and Quy Deanery stretches from Soham and Isleham in the north down to Fulbourn and Fen Ditton in the south and from the Great Ouse River to two groups of parishes to the east of Newmarket.  The Rev Tim Alban Jones is the Rural Dean and he runs the deanery in conjunction with the Deanery Synod and Deanery Chapter (the clergy). Synod meets three times a year and provides a link between the Diocese and the parishes. The Chapter meets about once a month and enables the clergy to give each other support and advice as well as planning deanery services such as the Deanery Carers' Service.

The Ely Diocese covers most of Cambridgeshire together with part of Norfolk and a few parishes from the other neighbouring counties. The diocesan website has useful information about the work of the Ely Diocese including Youth Work, Education and a link to the Cathedral website.
