Communion at Home

Friday 20 June 2008 at 4:22 pm Did you know that it is possible to have Holy Communion brought to people's homes? This is most often done for the sick, but we are very willing to bring communion to those who are housebound for whatever reason. Please let us know if you or somebody you know would like to receive communion at home (phone 720423) and we will sort something out. The service at home is normally rather shorter and simpler than the full service in church; we do not, for example, have hymns. We also take Holy Communion to the residents of Keith Leonard House and Fairhaven Nursing Home once a month (normally on the first Wednesday and Thursday of each month respectively) and these services are open to all. It is the normal custom, at these services, to take the bread and wine that has already been consecrated at one of our main services; those receiving home communion are therefore symbolically part of the whole congregation. As we say on Sundays: "We are one body, because we all share in one bread."

Our Worship

Thursday 03 May 2007 at 09:15 am

Worship is one of the central activities of the Church. The word literally means 'to give worth', and as Christians we regularly meet together to celebrate God as being that which is of greatest worth to us.

Practically our worship is mostly 'liturgical' in style. This means that we use services that have a clear structure and pattern. There is a mixture of words said by the person leading the service and shared congregational responses. This way everyone gets to be involved.

We have services in both modern and traditional language. Our Prayer Book services (BCP) using very traditional language (thee's and thou's); our Sung Eucharist (Holy Communion) using modern language.

Holy Communion is the central act of the Christian Life. We join together to remember Christ's life, death and resurrection, and to celebrate God's ongoing presence in the world.

Our Family Services are shorter and less formal, and endeavor to get people of all ages involved. There can often be a big jump for young people between Sunday School and 'Adult' Worship, and the Family Service aims to bridge that gap.

Streams is a series of 'different ways of worshipping' held on the first Sunday of the month. Usually based on Iona or Taize styles of worship (see calendar for the next service) there is space for quiet and reflection as well as different kinds of music to traditional hymns.

Like any activity coming to church can be a bit daunting the first time, please feel welcome to ask any questions you may have.

The Baptism Of Children

Thursday 03 May 2007 at 09:15 am

When parents arrange for the Baptism of their child the Church rejoices! A Baptism is a time of celebration for the parents and family of the child and for the whole Church.

Baptism creates a link between your family and the world-wide family of the Church, so the Church has a responsibility to help you with the spiritual development of your child. This will begin when one of our Church Visitors calls to explain the service and will tell you how we try to welcome parents and their children into the life of the Church.

If you wish your child’s Godparents to be present do please invite them. They may well wish to find out more about what being a Godparent means.

Your Wedding

Thursday 03 May 2007 at 09:14 am

Christians believe that marriage is a gift from God. In the marriage ceremony, a couple make a public declaration of lifelong commitment to love each other, come what may.

Everyone who lives in the parish or belongs to the parish church can get married in Church, you don't need to be a regular attender or baptised. Since 2008 it is also possible to get married in the parish church if you have a 'qualifying connection' eg if your parents live here, if you or your parents previously lived in the parish or if parents or grandparents were married in the parish church. More information on this can be found here or ask the Vicar if you are not sure.  If you are divorced it is still possible to be married in Church, but you will need to be willing to speak to the Vicar about the circumstances of the previous relationship.

The person responsible for organising the wedding is the vicar:
The Revd. Tim Alban Jones
The Vicarage
Cross Green
Soham
01353 720 423
vicar@soham.org.uk

Please contact him to make arrangements for preparation for your wedding no later than three months before the date of your wedding. But please do not hesitate to contact him earlier if you have any questions or if any problems should arise. We hope that we can make your wedding day a memorable and very happy occasion which you can enjoy.
